GØTUBRÁ

GØTUBRÁ is a dramedy in the beloved unruly-woman tradition, set in a world television has never explored.

Like many young Faroese, Helena (31) left the islands to build a life abroad. Thirteen years later, she has come home. Most return ready to settle down and start a family. Helena has returned to her alcoholic father’s basement with no idea what comes next. The reasonable thing to do seems to be to find someone. Or at least, that is what is expected of her.

In a country of around 50,000 people, Helena enters a dating pool where everyone knows everyone, someone has already dated your sister or your friend, and a one-night stand may involve meeting his mother before breakfast.

GØTUBRÁ is about dating, but its deeper subject is belonging. It explores sex, friendship, family, loneliness, and a small society’s expectations of a woman.

Like there is no tomorrow

When Spanish Frida (30) and her half-Norwegian daughter Gara (13) are evicted from their home in “Little Norway” on Gran Canaria, they end up in a run-down campsite for locals who have been pushed out by luxury resorts.

While Frida fights to survive, Gara slips into the island’s endless party scene. The heat intensifies, the sea begins to boil, and the island seems to be falling apart. Frida is terrified of losing both her daughter and the place she once called home.

Migration Solutions

Migration has become one of the most divisive political topics in Europe. The annual budget of Frontex is now over €1 billion, and multiple governments in the EU are mandated to reduce immigration.

At the same time, the continent has long positioned itself as a global defender of human rights, and now has an aging population. So, how does Europe combat a phenomenon which is central to its self-image and survival?

In a non-linear cinematic odyssey, we’ll meet the politicians, bureaucrats & consultants tasked with creating, implementing & managing contemporary migration policy. Alongside them, we’ll meet a number of migrants as they navigate European borders in increasingly bizarre ways. The film will be anchored by excerpts from Tayeb Salih’s novel Season of Migration to the North (1966), read by Sudanese refugee Mohamed Ibrahim Yagoub.

STONE LIFE

In the midst of Silje’s attempts to get pregnant, her father suddenly dies during a visit to her alternative self-development retreat in the American desert. Suddenly, both family harmony and spiritual ideals collapse.

Amid grief, an inheritance dispute and practical absurdities, Silje herself stands on the threshold of becoming a mother.

Together, she and her mother Anne-Lise are forced into an intense and darkly comic confrontation about life, death, responsibility and who actually gets to decide how a life, and a death, should be handled.
